On October 5, 2007, Bernadette Hines was driving to the hospital after her niece was injured in a car accident. She remembers the day clearly, in part because it was one of the first fall rain showers.

“We came off of the highway…and everybody was hitting their brakes because it was the first rain and it was slippery,” she said. “For some reason, this guy picked up speed…and he couldn’t stop because he had four bald tires, and he slammed into the back of me.” Bernadette was taken to the hospital by ambulance with back pain, but doctors said they couldn’t find anything wrong.
